The FedEx Cup PLayoffs begin this Thursday as the Northern Trust returns to the NEw York City suburbs and the Ridgewood Country Club. The event is open to only the top 125 point leaders in the FedEx Cup points and it will determine who moves on to next week’s Dell Technologies Championship. All eyes will be on the top and bottom of the standings, as fans look to see who will jump out to an early lead as well as who will be cut from the next tournament. The game’s top players will be competing, includin world number 1 and defending Northern Trust Champion Dustin Johnson.
2017 Champion Dustin Johnson
Dustin Johnson currently sits first in FedEx Cup rankings and has already won three events this season. He goes into this tournament as one of the favorites to lift the Cup and will take heart from last year’s clutch performance at Ridgewood. Johnson spent most of the 2017 Northern Trust chasing Jordan Spieth. Amazingly, Johnson played his last 29 holes of golf without a single bogey and erased the 5-shot lead Spieth enjoyed entering into the final round. The resulting playoff lasted 3 holes before Johnson hit a birdie on hole 18 to seal the win.
2018 Northern Trust Preview
Tiger Woods' return to the postseason has made headlines as fans wonder if he can reclaim some of his past glory. However, more serious contenders include not only defending champion Dustin Johnson, but also 2017 FedEx Cup champion Justin Thomas and U.S. Open and PGA Championship winner Brooks Koepke. Notably absent is Rory McIlroy, a 4-time postseason winner, and the injured Rickie Fowler. Per tournament rules, they will not be replaced. With such a strong field, any of a number of golfers could finish top. However, it is unlikely given the stakes and past history that we will see an upset victory by a relative unknown.
