The Barracuda Championship begins Thursday at Reno, Nevada’s Montrêux Golf and Country Club. The Championship is unique because it is the only tournament on the PGA Tour that uses the Modified Stableford scoring system. The Modified Stableford system awards points based on a golfer’s score in relation to par for each individual hole. For par, the golfer is awarded 0 points but receives +2 for a birdie and +5 for an eagle. If the golfer scores an albatross they receive +8. In contrast, a bogey is only -1 points with a double bogey or worse all counting for -2 points. The purpose of Modified Stableford scoring is to create a very aggressive style of play that encourages risk taking. Since the reward for scoring below par is much higher than the penalty for scoring over par, golfers routinely attempt shots that in other tournaments they would avoid. This makes the Barracuda Championship both highly entertaining and wholly unpredictable. It is well worth watching this truly one-of-a-kind tournament.
