The Open Championship, often referred to in America as the British Open, is the oldest golf tournament in existence and one of the sport’s major championships. It traditionally enjoys one of the strongest fields in golf and this year’s edition features 78 of the 80 top ranked golfers in the world. Most golfers in the field have earned their spots through exemptions based on their past performances. Some exempt golfers include all past Open Champions under 60, the top-10 finishers from last year’s tournament and the last 5 winners of golf’s other major championships. Exemptions are also granted for performance in smaller tours such as the exemption granted 2017 Japan Open winner Yuta Ikeda. However, 46 spots are available through the Open Qualifying Series that gives golfers from around the world on a variety of tours the opportunity to play the Open Championship
