The Players Championship is held annually at the famous TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Verde Beach, Florida and is often considered the “fifth major” for its difficulty, large prize purse and prestige. The 2018 edition is being held May 10-13 and looks to be as competitive as ever. The field consists of 144 players with the first spots going to all PGA Tour event winners since the 2017 Players Championship. The field is then rounded out by recent majors and WGC winners, past Players Championship winners, and the top 125 golfers from last season’s FedEx Cup points list. Last year’s Senior Players champion and the developmental Web.com Tour money leader are also invited, making sure the Players Championship is filled with tournament winners.

Course

The Players Championship is held on TPC Sawgrass’ Stadium course, a Pete and Alice Dye designed classic known for its difficulty. The course features numerous hazards and looks to punish errant shots. The Stadium course is best known for the island green on the par-3 17th hole. The hole is easily reachable by even non-pros, but it is the complete pass/fail nature of the hole that make it so captivating. Either the ball is on the green ready for a birdie putt or the ball’s in the water. While the 17th hole has more fame, the closing hole is equally beautiful and challenging as golfers avoid water that borders the entire left side of this dogleg left. Many golfers’ have seen their hopes sink into the waters of the 18th hole. For fans, the course features grass mounds for spectators to sit on for a more natural approach to stadium course design.
