2018 World Golf Championship: Mexico Championship

By Ryan Watson

The World Golf Championships, often shortened to WGC, are a series of four events that count towards the PGA Tour, European Tour, Asian Golf Tour and the PGA Tour of Australasia. These events offer very large cash prizes to competitors, and are often seen as second only to the majors in their level of difficulty and prestige.

The 2018 WGC-Mexico Championship is the first World Golf Championship event of 2018. It takes place March 1-4 in Naucalpan, part of the greater Mexico City metro area. Club de Golf Chapultepec is the home course for this year’s event.

The field of players will include players from all the major professional tours. Receiving invites to the tournament are the top fifty players from the Official World Golf Ranking on February 19 and 26, 2018, the top thirty players from the 2017 final FedEx Cup Points List, the top ten players from the 2018 FedEx Cup Points List as of February 26, 2018, the top twenty players from the final 2017 European Tour Race to Dubai and the top ten from the 2018 European Tour Race to Dubai as of February 19, 2018. In addition, the top two players from the 2017 Japan Golf Tour, 2017 PGA Tour of Australasia, 2017 PGA Tour of Australasia, 2017 Sunshine Tour, 2017 Asian Tour and the top ranked available player from Mexico in the Official World Golf Ranking as of February 26, 2018.

Tournament Preview

The field currently stands at over 60 golfers, though that number will increase throughout the week. However, the WGC-Mexico Championship is about quality over quantity. With 45 of the 50 top ranked golfers competing, including all of the top-5, the WGC-Mexico Championship is sure to offer the best golf of the week.

World number 1 and defending champion Dustin Johnson remains the favorite to repeat and claim the 550 FedEx Cup points on offer. Justin Rose, world number 4, is another favorite. Rose would be winning his third World Golf Championship in a row if he were to win in Mexico. The bookmakers see 2017 FedEx Cup winner Justin Thomas as another favorite, in addition to world number 2 Jon Rahm.
