The World Golf Championships, often shortened to WGC, are a series of four events that count towards all major professional golf tours, notably the PGA Tour, European Tour, Asian Golf Tour and the PGA Tour of Australasia. These events offer very large cash prizes to competitors, and are often seen as second only to the majors in their level of difficulty and prestige. The 2018 WGC-Mexico Championship is the first World Golf Championship event of 2018. It takes place March 1-4 in Naucalpan, part of the greater Mexico City metro area. Club de Golf Chapultepec is the home course for this year’s event. The field of players will include players from all the major professional tours. Receiving invites to the tournament are the top fifty players from the Official World Golf Ranking on February 19 and 26, 2018, the top thirty players from the 2017 final FedEx Cup Points List, the top ten players from the 2018 FedEx Cup Points List as of February 26, 2018, the top twenty players from the final 2017 European Tour Race to Dubai and the top ten from the 2018 European Tour Race to Dubai as of February 19, 2018. In addition, the top two players from the 2017 Japan Golf Tour, 2017 PGA Tour of Australasia, 2017 PGA Tour of Australasia, 2017 Sunshine Tour, 2017 Asian Tour and the top ranked available player from Mexico in the Official World Golf Ranking as of February 26, 2018.

Club de Golf Chapultepec

One of Mexico’s premier courses, Club de Golf Chapultepec has a long and storied history. Designed by U.S. Open winning brothers Willie and Alex Smith, the Scotsmen designed a then revolutionary course that hosted fourteen Mexico Opens. However, in 1972 the course was updated by Percy Clifford to give it a more modern feel. The course seems long at 7,330 yards with numerous uphill holes, however, the the altitude (over 7,800 feet) causes the ball to fly further making the course playable. This is Club de Golf Chapultepec's second year hosting the WBC-Mexico Championship, the tournament having previously been sponsored by Cadillac and hosted by Trump National Doral Miami.

Past Champions

The defending champion is Dustin Johnson, who won the 2017 event by one stroke over England’s Tommy Fleetwood. Previous winners include Adam Scott, Patrick Reed, Phil Mickelson and Justin Rose. All are expected to challenge for this year’s title.

Where to Play in Mexico City

If you plan to attend the WGC-Mexico Championship and are looking to play a quick round, look no further than Bosque Real Country Club. While the best golf in Mexico remains concentrated in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico City’s Bosque Real holds its own against the other courses in the country. Located just outside the city in Huixquilucan, the course features both tree lined and open parkland style holes with various changes in elevation. Designed by Robert von Hagge, Michael Smelek and Richard Baril, this course gained some notice when it hosted the LPGA Tour’s MasterCard Classic from 2005 to 2009. Golfers must book in advance as tee times can go quickly.
