Visiting Asia's Best Golf Resorts

By Ryan Watson

Asia is known for beautiful vistas and has long been popular with tourists. The continent was also one of the first regions outside of Europe and the US to adopt golf, with the game taking root in Japan in the early 20th century and the game as whole growing in leaps and bounds in the past 3 decades. The result is a glut of luxurious golf resorts dotting the continent. The following are Asia's best golf resorts.

Kawana Hotel and Golf Course

Kawana Hotel and Golf Course offers 2 wonderful seaside courses nestled among the beautiful Japanese countryside. The resort is one of Asia’s oldest golf facilities, first opening in 1936. The Oshima Course, first opened in 1928 provides a more relaxing test while the Fuji Course is a championship caliber course that provides both oceanside holes and views of its namesake Mt. Fuji. Both courses incorporate aspects of parkland and links style design choices to provide ample fun and challenge.

FLC Luxury Resort Quy Nhon

Vietnam’s FLC Luxury Resort Quy Nhon is a secluded resort located on the South China Sea. The facilities include full amenities and private white sand beaches, along with 36 holes of golf. The Ocean Course provides magnificent views of the ocean and beaches while providing a championship caliber challenge. The other course is the Mountain course, which takes you through tropical jungles with intricate layouts and fun elevation changes.

Banyan The Resort Hua Hin

Banyan the Resort offers luxury villas and a private spa to visitors of this Thai paradise. The course was established in 2009 and is seen as one of the top courses in Southeast Asia. The course features fairly straightforward layouts with generally wide fairways. The challenge comes in the use of water which involves natural creeks and streams, lakes, and ponds. The course feels natural and offers incredible views of the surrounding forests.

Grand XIV Naruto Golf & Spa Resort

Another entry from Japan, the Grand XIV Golf & Spa Resort is located in coastal Naruto. Guests describe huge rooms with amazing facilities and restaurants on location. The 2 golf courses are kept in immaculate condition, and provide enough challenge for experienced golfers while still being accessible for novice golfers. The courses offer stunning views of both the ocean and the surrounding mountains for an unforgettable round.

Mission Hills Haikou

China has been amassing some of the world’s greatest golfing facilities and Mission Hills Haikou is proving just what a golfing destination the country has become. Located on the tropical island of Hainan, the resort is the world’s largest golf complex with an amazing 12 full-sized 18 hole courses. There are courses for every skill level and the resort aims at your repeat business as it is impossible to take it all in in just one visit.

South Cape Owners Club

Few countries love golf as much as South Korea, with the tiny peninsular country boasting an impressive number of professionals and courses. The South Cape Owners Club is located in a rural and isolated part of South Korea near the small islands of coastal Namhae, and boasts a luxury resort with an immaculate course. The course plays around the rocky coastline and offers stunning views and dramatic holes.

Els Club Malaysia

Located in a surreal jungle, Els Club Malaysia provides an unforgettable golf experience. The course was designed by Ernie Els and features 5 oceanside holes with the remaining holes inside a rainforest. A unique aspect of the course is that it features no bunkers. Instead, Els relied on strategically placed tree-lines and numerous small meandering brooks and creeks to provide enough challenge for any golfer.

Bali National Golf Club & Resort

The island paradise of Bali, part of the nation of Indonesia, has long been favored for its luxurious amenities, white sand beaches, and crystal clear blue waters. Bali National Golf Club & Resort provides plush accommodations while also providing for championship golf. The course was designed by Nelson & Haworth Golf Course Architects in 2001 and is known for its beautifully manicured fairways and greens. The course is very playable, and is considered by many to be the island’s best course.
