Taylor Made Burner 09 Golf Club Review

By Mike Camunas

The TaylorMade Burner Driver's elongated head helps against air resistance for explosvie swing speed.

The TaylorMade 2009 460 drivers come in a variety of options, including lofts from 9.5 up to 12 HT, which is only available in a right-handed model. Graphite shafts are available in senior, regular, stiff and x-stiff flex. It's a shaft by Fujikura, which is considerably lightweight for greater distance and accuracy. Shaft torque is engineered for golfers with an average tempo who want a mid/high ball flight. The driver comes with an elongated driver head with a deep face height that allows for less air resistance, an Arrow 2 Lite grip and a titanium face for maximum distance. Suggested retail begins at $299.

The entire lightweight design of Burner drivers allows for explosive swing speed, and the head gives a high launch but a low spin on the ball. This feature promotes more forgiveness and workability for shapes of shots. And the larger address area gives a golfer more of a chance to strike the ball and avoid a slice.

There are too many lofts on this driver, and anyone thinking of purchasing it should consider the low loft. With the high-launch trajectory, the larger the loft, the more of a pop-up. Most tee shots will be a little higher than most drivers. Though that can equal more distance, it also can equal a strange bounce on or off the fairway.

Bottom Line

The one thing missing from Burners is the adjustable weights and positions that come with TaylorMade's R9 drivers. Though those are for more experienced players, Burners are good for golfers looking to swing big and bomb the ball as far as their swing allows.
