Video Transcript: Cure For Hook Shots: Later Release

One of the most common causes that closes the clubface, thereby making the ball hook, is the fact that a lot of people on the downswing will have a tendency to release the head of the club very early, what’s called “casting” the head of the club, so that the head of the club arrives at impact before your hands. What you would like to have happened is that at the moment of impact you would like to have your hands in such a position that the back of your left wrist is flat, and the back of your right wrist is bent, so that you can compress the ball. A real good drill to help you to get into this later release position is what I call the “punch drill.” What I’d like for you to do is to take a short iron, like an 8-iron, and make a half a backswing. Then as you come down, I want you to try to hit as low a shot as you can from a normal ball position, like you’re trying to “punch the ball” underneath a tree. If you do that, your hands will get into a later release position getting rid of that high hook. Let me demonstrate. This “punch drill” is one of the quickest ways that I know to get your hands into a late release position eliminating that hook.
