Video Golf Tip | Hitting Low Tee Shots

I came back recently from playing golf in Scotland, in a father-son tournament at St. Andrews, and I will guarantee you one thing, if you are driving the ball you had better keep it low because it is very very windy there. What I do to hit a low tee shot is maybe just the opposite of what you think. Most people like to tee it low, but when you tee it low you have to descend a little bit with the club to get the clubface on the ball, particularly with the deep faced drivers that we now have. That puts extra backspin on the shot and makes the ball rise. Instead of that I tee the ball up high, suspend the club in the air, almost as if I am trying to hit the middle to top half of the ball, tilt my hands slightly forward to take a little loft off, and then swing much more level than I do on my normal tee shot. More level means that I am not putting as much downward pressure on the ball to make it spin; it is going to keep it low. So this is what it looks like, driving it under the wind: Tee it up; Suspend it in the air; Hands ahead a little bit; and Keep it low.
