Ben Hogan Apex Golf Ball Reviews

Ben Hogan Apex Tour Black Golf Ball
Specs

Ben Hogan Apex golf balls offer multiple tiers of quality and pricing, including the Tour and Hawk series. The Tour series features three different variations: Tour Deep, Tour Black and Tour Red. Designed for low to mid handicappers, the Tour Red and Black versions boast a four-piece design with an ultra soft urethane cover. Meanwhile, the Hawk and Tour Deep series cater to less-experienced players, with a three-piece design aimed at improving distance and ball flight.

Perks

For advanced golfers, the Tour series utilizes Hogan's thinnest urethane cover, which provides tremendous feel. The Tour Black and Red's energy transfer core minimizes spin, which allows for more distance off the tee. The Hawk series exhibits a more user friendly option for beginning players with a lower compression of 70. In addition, the large core and firm urethane cover maintain a soft feel but enhance durability compared to the Tour series.

Sacrifices

While both the Tour and Hawk series offer quality, Hogan's value offerings are lacking. When sold new, Hogan golf ball lines are higher priced than competitors for more budget conscience consumers. Although the Hawk series allows for more durability, recreational players will often find better value and longevity elsewhere. And Hogan has discontinued golf ball production, limiting their availability for users who have become accustomed to playing Apex golf balls.

Bottom Line

Hogan equipment has been known for its quality construction since its entry into the marketplace, and their Apex golf ball line is no different. But with different competitors focusing solely on advanced or recreational offerings, Hogan Apex golf balls haven't found a sufficient niche in the market.

Golf Equipment Tip of the Day

How to Give Your Golf Clubs a Tuneup
by John D. Tudor
During the course of a year, an avid golfer's clubs are swung anywhere between 18,000 and 20,000 times, carried or hauled on a golf cart for about 3,000 miles, roughly handled another 1,000 times, tossed about the trunk of a car for over 20,000 miles and swung in a variety of less-than-perfect situations involving low-hanging branches, rocks and hardpan. Obviously, the stress and strain a golf club endures goes far beyond that for which it's designed, so now is the perfect time to examine your woods and irons and, if necessary, get them back into playing shape.
