Nikon 500G Rangefinder Reviews
Specs

The Nikon 500 G Rangefinder includes an auto-scan feature that displays immediate distances in the viewfinder while you pass the lens over different targets. Software is designed for golf because it reads the closer targets. It runs on a CR-2 battery and is water-resistant. It has a 6x magnifier and a total range of 500 yards more than enough for a golf hole. The unit is small and lightweight. It is 3 1/2 inches by 2 1/2 inches by 1 1/2 inches and weighs less than 1/2 lb.

Perks

The Nikon Rangefinder gives you the best and most accurate distances because it selects the closest target. That means you can find the distance to the cup, and read distances to obstructions and water hazards. Other rangefinders give you distances to the farthest object, which would include trees beyond the green. The auto scan makes quick work of reading distances to several targets at once.

Sacrifices

The price is the major sacrifice. It is slightly more expensive than other models at $240 as of August 2009. But the features are worth the extra money. It is not completely water proof and won't survive being dropped into water.

Bottom Line

This laser rangefinder is ideal for amateurs and serious golfers because of the multitarget scan features. It is also made for golf. A solid, midlevel rangefinder that has everything you need and works flawlessly.

Golf Equipment Tip of the Day

Using Frequency to Test the Flex of Your Shafts
by Jeff Jackson
What's the flex of your shafts? At one time, a golfer could safely answer that his or her shafts were stiff, regular or ladies flex. That simply isn't the case any longer. Most manufacturers have their own method of shaft measurement. What this means is that one company's "R" flex shaft may actually be softer than another's "A" or even "L" flex. How, then, can a golfer select the appropriate shaft if no manufacturing standard exists? In a word: frequency.
