Nike Slingshot Golf Club Review

Nike Slingshot 4D irons boast a variable width sole
Specs

Slingshot 4D irons, from Nike, are mid-sized irons made of stainless steel with a variable sole: wider soles on long irons for higher launch, while short irons have thinner soles for better control. Slingshots also feature the Nike signature Slingback design, which places the sole weight toward the back of the club head on long irons and forward on short clubs. This, Nike claims allows the player to achieve proper ball flight throughout the set. Shaft options include Speed Step SL steel and UST Slingshot graphite, available in standard flexes.

Perks

The unique weighting, variable sole width and offset makes Nike Slingshot fairly comfortable game-improvement irons. With easy and controlled swings, each moves through impact swiftly with solid launch. Sweet-spot impact is soft and controlled while each club has nice pinch from a variety of lies.

Sacrifices

As scoring clubs, Nike Slingshots fall significantly short in comparison to other game-improvement clubs on the market. The slightest mis-hit can cause significant vibration, while short irons lack the ability to put solid spin on the ball.

Bottom Line

Nike Slingshot 4D irons possess a slight inability to perform outside of controlled golf swing. Their $400 to $500 price tag (as of 2009) may be a bit difficult to justify for a developing player in need of a versatile set of game-improvement irons. Demoing for proper fit and performance is recommended.

Golf Equipment Tip of the Day

How to Give Your Golf Clubs a Tuneup
by John D. Tudor
During the course of a year, an avid golfer's clubs are swung anywhere between 18,000 and 20,000 times, carried or hauled on a golf cart for about 3,000 miles, roughly handled another 1,000 times, tossed about the trunk of a car for over 20,000 miles and swung in a variety of less-than-perfect situations involving low-hanging branches, rocks and hardpan. Obviously, the stress and strain a golf club endures goes far beyond that for which it's designed, so now is the perfect time to examine your woods and irons and, if necessary, get them back into playing shape.
