Denver Area Public Golf Courses

By Timothy Sexton

Denver Area Public Golf Courses
Visitors coming to Denver from lower elevations definitely need to get acclimated to the thin atmosphere in the Mile High Center before trying their hands at one of the city's golf courses. In addition to the potential for developing altitude sickness, the thin air affects your game in subtle ways so be prepared for some differences. Spend enough time at the driving range to learn how your distance will be affected on the links before you actually drive from the tee. Although it may seem impossible, golf is considered a year-round pursuit in Denver.

Green Valley Ranch Golf Club

Located in the Eastern section of Denver, to the southwest of Denver International Airport, you will find Green Valley Ranch Golf Club, the recipient of many local and state awards. The greens are large and contoured and generally neither too fast nor too slow. Not only are there water hazards on ten holes, but wetlands often come into play if your drive goes errant. You can reserve a tee time up to eight days in advance, but don't show up wearing denim.

Willis Case Golf Club

Those who enjoy tight fairways with a strong slope and short greens will enjoy Willis Case Golf Club, located about ten minutes from downtown Denver. The Rocky Mountains in the distance provide a breathtaking backdrop to this simple municipal course. While you don't have to worry about water hazards, be prepared for runaway balls on the many hills that protrude forth up and down this course.

Foothills Golf Course

Foothills Golf Course was twice voted the most family-friendly course in the state by AvidGolfer. Foothills actually has both an 18-hole and 9-hole course on its property. There is also a driving range and you can practice putting or your short game even at night thanks to the lights. The 18-hole course presents a series of challenges including water hazards, hills, and strategic placement of the bunkers.

Overland Golf Course

Overland Golf Course, the oldest course in Denver, is an 18-hole championship course with 50 lighted driving range stations as well as a place to practice your putting and short game. The fairways are narrow and if you enjoy undulating greens then you will have a great time playing this traditional course. Water presents an obstacle on only one hole, but nearly every hole presents the distraction of a great view of the city of Denver.
