Florida Gulf Coast Golf Courses

By Timothy Sexton

Florida Gulf Coast Golf Courses
The Florida Gulf Coast stretches for hundreds of miles and, like the rest of the Sunshine State, is dotted with golf courses. Whether you plan on stopping your Florida journey along the Panhandle or heading down to the Big Bend or farther south, if you're a golf fan you will find plenty of places to bask in the warmth while sinking putts surrounded by scenic splendor. Florida's Gulf Coast golf courses range from those apt for beginners and novices to very challenging courses designed with experienced golfers in mind.

Creekside Golf Course

Located in America's first European settlement, Pensacola, Creekside Golf Course looks deceptively easy because of the paucity of tree hazards and the flat terrain. Then you start to play and realize that a meandering creek is going to affect nearly every hole. Even with only 20 sand bunkers, this course can be a surprising challenge. Dress code forbids tank tops and cut-offs. Reduced rates are in place on weekdays and for seniors and juniors.

Clearwater Country Club

Clearwater Country Club is a semi-private golf course located in Clearwater along the West Coast of the peninsula. The historical significance of this club traces back to its construction in 1920. The challenge is in approaching the tight fairways that are guarded ferociously by bunkers. Reduced fees are available during weekdays, twilight times, and during the low season from April through December. Dress code prohibits cut-offs and tank tops.

Bay Dunes Golf Course

The Panhandle beach town of Panama City features this Scottish links-style championship course. Most of the course is fairly flat, but the links come into play with some rolling mounds that can affect even the most experienced golfer. The warm breezes coming in off the Gulf the Mexico can also affect your drive. Water hazards come into play on 10 of the 18 holes, making this a very tough course to tame, especially when you toss in the high heat and humidity of a summer day. Dress code forbids tank tops and cut-offs.

Beachview Golf Club

Located on Sanibel Island, the name says it all. A beautiful view of the beach provides an aesthetic appeal to this golf course. Another excellent feature of this golf course is the wealth of wildlife that you come across while playing. Water surrounds nearly every hole and the fairways vary from very wide to incredibly narrow. Dress code requires a collared shirt and cut-offs and tank tops are prohibited.
