Arizona Route 66 Hotels
U.S. Route 66, "The Mother Road," is a historic roadway that originally ran from Chicago to Los Angeles. In its prime, it was the primary highway for motorists heading west in the early 20th century, but was eventually rendered obsolete by the building of the interstate highway system. When traveling through Arizona, on 66, there is a variety of historic sites and some unique hotels in which to spend the night.

The Lodge

The Lodge is located on Route 66 in the town of Williams, Arizona, known as the "Gateway to the Grand Canyon." The hotel's location in the Kaibab National Forest will give you access to an array of outdoor activities such as fishing, camping and hiking. The Lodge was recently renovated as of 2009 and offers a choice of rooms and suites. The Southwest décor gives the hotel a rustic, Old West feel. You will have access to Grand Canyon tours via ground or air. For golf, the town of Williams includes the Elephant Rocks Golf Course (see Resources section below).

Wigwam Motel

In the town of Holbrook you will find the Wigwam Motel, which is listed on the National Registry of Historic Places. Built in 1950 the Wigwam is one of seven similar motels that were built between Florida and Arizona. The motel is often called Wigwam Village because it consists of 15 teepees constructed of concrete and steel. Though not plush, the Wigwam offers comfortable accommodations at an affordable price, and you will get a taste of Hopi Indian history. For golf, visit Hidden Cove (see Resources section below), a nine-hole course just west of Holbrook.

La Posada

When spending the night in Winslow, Arizona, consider staying at La Posada, called "the last great railroad hotel." Built in 1929 for the Santa Fe Railway, La Posada was completely restored in 1997. A highlight of the property is the large garden filled with a variety of desert plants. Dining is available seven days a week in the Turquoise Room, which is open from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. For golf, try the Santa Fe Station Golf Course (see Resources section), a nine-hole course located in Winslow.
