Famous Cities in Arizona

Famous Cities in Arizona
Arizona brings about images of dry heat and the desert, but in fact the topography is quite varied. Across the broad expanse of land that includes valleys, plateaus, canyons and deserts, you'll find many famous cities that each have carved out a place in the history of the state. Arizona is a very popular destination for golfers, and each section of the state provides a new and interesting scenic view from the links.

Tombstone

The first city in Arizona to achieve fame, although it was more like infamy, was Tombstone. Tombstone was the site of the famous gunfight at the OK Corral. Tombstone today uses its Wild West infamy to draw in tourists. You can visit authentic spots from the shoot 'em up days of Tombstone like the Bird Cage Theater, the Crystal Palace Saloon, as well as the famous corral. Tombstone is really more famous for its past than for golfing, so a stop here is more for tourism's sake than hitting those famous Arizona golf courses.

Tucson

Tucson is Arizona's second biggest city and lays claim to being the oldest continually inhabited city in the United States. It is estimated that human beings have lived in the area now known as Tucson for 15,000 years. Playing golf here may be preferable to playing in a city like Phoenix because the elevation of 2400 feet means milder conditions. On average, the sun shines in Tucson more than 300 days out of the year, which also makes this a popular spot for golfers. The city has classic courses like Arizona National, La Paloma and Omni Tucson National.

Yuma

Yuma is an Arizona town made famous to many people through the original movie "3:10 to Yuma" and its recent remake. Yuma is also famous for being very hot almost all year long. Because of the extreme heat, Yuma is not the kind of place you would want to golf in the middle of summer, but during winter, the courses are fairly bustling. In addition, Yuma features some interesting historical sites such as the Yuma Territorial Prison, considered one of the humane examples of a prison ever run in the United States.

Phoenix

Phoenix is Arizona's largest city and one of the 10 biggest in the United States. A modern metropolis, Phoenix has lived up to its name as a city that arose from the ashes of an ancient civilization to become even greater than it had been. Phoenix may be most famous among golfers for being the home of more than 200 courses in the greater metropolitan area, including the surrounding communities. Phoenix is definitely a golfer's city with courses that provide the opportunity to bask in the sunshine, enjoy the Southwestern terrain, and even come across the occasional coyote. Just a sampling of the many golf courses in Phoenix includes the Boulders Golf Club and Gold Canyon Golf Resort.
