Weather
The most immediate and notable difference in taking a trip to Disney World in January has to do with weather conditions. The average daily temperature in Orlando in January is 61 degrees F with the average high reaching around 70 degrees F and the average low dipping into the 50s. Disney World is more than just theme parks, so you must consider not just how cooler weather will affect you while you ride outdoor attractions and walk the parks, but also that taking advantage of the water parks, the water rides, and even the resort pools can potentially be out of the question depending on how cold the weather gets. Also consider the colder temperatures if you plan on taking advantage of Disney's golf courses.
Crowds
January is one of the best months to visit Disney World if by best you mean avoiding crowds. Make sure that you wait until after the Christmas to New Year's crowd has died down, which is usually by the second week of the month. January during the weekdays can mean almost no waiting in line at all thanks to the fact that school is back in session and adults are using their money to pay off Christmas debt. If you the electricity of a big crowd is part of the thrill for you, January may not be the best time to go.
Repair and Maintenance
January is often referred to as the best time of the year to go to Disney World, but that is only in reference to the thinner crowds. Because the crowds are at their thinnest during this month, Disney often uses this advantage to temporarily shut down some of its most popular rides for repair, maintenance or renovation. Although problems can cause any ride at Disney to suddenly be closed to the public at any time, if you are set on riding the most popular rides, January may the last month you want to plan a trip.
Winter Hours
Another disadvantage to visiting Disney World during January is that although you may spend less time waiting in line, you actually have less time to spend in the park. During the off-season Disney's parks may close as much as two hours earlier than they do at other periods. This early closing can also affect such events as parades and fireworks.
