Canyon City, Colo., the third-oldest city in Colorado, is in Fremont County and sits on the Arkansas River Valley on the Rocky Mountains foothills. Canyon City is the site of mining coal, iron, marble and granite. Things to do in Canyon City represent the days when this area was wild and catered to visitors who enjoy participating in outdoor activities. Locations in Canyon City have received awards and been preserved for their historic significance.

Play Golf

Play golf at Four Mile Ranch Golf Club in Canyon City, a new course that opened in 2008. The 1,640-acre area served as a working cattle ranch before Jim Engh transformed it into an 18-hole golf course. Carved out of the natural terrain of the area, the course challenges beginners and advanced players. The club provides lessons for all levels. Purchase a tournament package and host business or fundraising tournaments and events at the club. In 2008, this course was named one of the 10 best new courses by Travel and Leisure magazine. Golf Digest listed this course as one of the best new public courses of 2008.

Taste Wine

Enjoy fine wine at The Winery of Holy Cross Abbey, which opened in 2002. Located in the Wet Mountains of Canyon City, you taste wine on the site of the historic Holy Cross Abbey. The winery staff in the tasting room guides you as you taste complimentary wines or pay $1 for reserve wines. Colorado wines include merlot, chardonnay, sauvignon blanc and Riesling. They've won more than 30 wine awards, including the double gold in the International Grand Harvest Competition for their Riesling. They have wines from California, Romania, France and other locations in addition to their Colorado wines. The winery hosts events such as the harvest festival in the fall which showcases their wines and food, produce and entertainment from locals. The event is free and open to the public, including children.

Royal Gorge Bridge

The Royal Gorge Bridge is a quarter-mile, suspension bridge, the highest bridge in the world. The bridge, constructed in 1929, is 1,260 feet long, 18 feet wide and 150 feet high. Once home to numerous Native American tribes, the area is on the National Historic Register. Ride the aerial tram or walk on the bridge. Adventurous visitors participate in outdoor activities like hiking, rock climbing, four-wheeling, horseback riding and whitewater rafting. The Wapiti Western Wildlife Park, a 10-acre area, has native Colorado animals like elk, bison and sheep. Camp outdoors or sleep in their Bighorn Mountaintop Lodge with kitchens and guest rooms. You are near shopping and dining locations.
