San Diego Zoo
Joan Embery's classic appearances with Johnny Carson made the San Diego Zoo one of the most famous zoos in the world. It is a world-class zoo, and you certainly don't need kids to give you an excuse for a visit. More than 4,000 animals call the San Diego Zoo home, and the highlights include apes and monkeys, big cats and playful meerkats, who have become incredibly popular thanks to the Animal Planet show "Meerkat Manor."

Joshua Tree National Monument
The rock band U2 introduced a generation to the Joshua Tree via its album of the same name. The Joshua Tree is a strange sight itself, but placed in the middle of the desert, these trees become almost surreal set against a backdrop of enormous boulders.

Disneyland
If you've got kids in tow, you can't beat Disneyland as far as Southern California attractions go. Even if you've been to Disney World in Orlando, it's worth a day at Disneyland, because the original Disney theme park has some things that Florida doesn't. Disneyland still has the fan favorite Mr. Toad's Wild Ride, the Indiana Jones Adventure Ride, and the all-time classic Matterhorn, with its famous bobsleds.
