Historic Landmarks in Mackinac City

Historic Landmarks in Mackinac City
Mackinaw City is located in the heart of Michigan's golf country. With the natural beauty of the woods and its position as a gateway between Lake Huron and Lake Michigan, Mackinaw City has a lot to offer in the way of historic sites. So, when you're not on one of the five pristine courses in the area, take a step back in time and explore what it was like back in the old days.

Fort Mackinac

Located on the southern side of Mackinac Island, Fort Mackinac once was home to English and American soldiers, but at different times in history. The interesting thing about Fort Mackinac is that it's not just a museum and place to tour, but an actual walking historical experience. Marching soldiers, cannons that fire and trumpets that bugle bring the history of the area alive unlike any simple museum ever could. While you are there, take advantage of the restaurant that provides a bird's-eye view of the Strait of Mackinac with outdoor seating during the nice summer days.

Mill Creek Discovery Park

Mill Creek Discovery Park brings history and modern excitement together in one big amalgamation of fun. There's a working 18th-century sawmill that can still be seen today ripping through logs. Nature trails and restored historical buildings set in pristine wilderness complete the experience of stepping back to a simpler time, while a zip line will get the blood flowing and remind you that this is more than just another 18th-century preservation effort. Mill Creek is located on the northern end of Mackinaw City.

Icebreaker Mackinaw Maritime Museum

The Mackinaw City area has a rich history, whether you're talking about colonial America or maritime legacy. The Icebreaker Mackinaw Maritime Museum doesn't take you back to the 18th century, but it does allow you to tour a piece of living World War II history in the form of the United State Coast Guard ship, the Icebreaker Mackinaw WAGB-83. Originally built to provide materials for the war during the winter months, the ship today offers tours and stories of her legendary voyages over the icy waters of the Great Lakes. The WAGB-83 is housed pier side at the eastern end of the old railroad dock in Mackinaw City.
