Virginia State Landmarks
The state of Virginia is peppered with premium golf courses like Williamsburg National Golf Club, Swan Point Yacht & Country Club and the Army Navy Country Club, all of which draw in golfers from near and far. But amid these courses are numerous landmarks that reflect Virginia's rich state history and its significance on a national scale. If you are as interested in sightseeing as you are in golfing, you'll find it easy to visit these landmarks without straying too far from the links.

George Washington Birthplace National Monument

On February 22, 1732, George Washington was born at the plantation where this memorial now stands. The grounds include a memorial house that is furnished and decorated with authentic eighteenth century artifacts and household items, and the plantation is still alive with livestock, wheat and tobacco crops and other agricultural products that were originally grown and raised there. The golf course at Swan Point Yacht & Country Club is located less than eight miles to the north.

Jamestown Settlement

The original Jamestown Settlement was the very first settlement founded by the English following their arrival in North America. Today, what is commonly referred to as Jamestown Settlement is an adjacent tourist attraction that features a museum, historical reenactments and replicas of the actual settlement's buildings and fixtures. The Williamsburg National Golf Club is located only three miles to the north.

Arlington National Cemetery

Originally founded during the Civil War, Arlington National Cemetery is where thousands of military veterans from all U.S. wars and all military branches are interred. Major installations at the site include the Arlington Memorial Amphitheater, the Tomb of the Unknowns and specific memorial statues to multiple wars, conflicts and military branches. The Army Navy Country Club is just over a mile to the southeast of the cemetery.

Marine Corps War Memorial

Not far from Arlington National Cemetery is the Marine Corps War Memorial, which stands as a tribute to the United States Marine Corps. The focal point of the memorial is an enormous statue depicting the raising of the U.S. flag in Iwo Jima, as depicted in Joe Rosenthal's famous photograph. This site is one of the few national monuments at which the flag flies day and night. The East Potomac Park Golf Course is located about two and a half miles to the southeast.

Monticello

The estate where Thomas Jefferson lived, formally known as Monticello, remains in immaculate condition due to extensive and ongoing maintenance. The mansion and its grounds are enormous, so there are several types of tours offered; some are relatively short and incomplete, but if you have the time to dedicate to seeing as much of the grounds as possible, extended tours are also available. Meadowcreek Golf Course is located less than three miles to the north.
