Dyersburg is typical of small-town America. With a population just under 20,000 and average income hovering around $30,000, it is a place to get away from life in the big city to enjoy what Tennessee has to offer. Dyer County originally belonged to the Chickasaw Indians who relinquished the land to the United States in 1818. Dyersburg was the hub for steamboat navigation on the Forked Deer River for commerce going to and from St. Louis. Proceeding into the late 1800s and early 1900s, the town transitioned to being a rail-hub for the Newport News and Mississippi Valley Railroad for cotton distribution. Today, it is connected to Missouri and Illinois by Interstate 155, which has the only major Mississippi River crossing for a great distance, and is located just over an hour from both Memphis to the south as well as Reelfoot and Kentucky Lakes to the north.
Play the Local Golf Courses
There are two 18-hole golf courses located in Dyersburg proper. The Municipal Golf Course is typical of the area, being 6,592 yards from the longest tees with a par of 71. The course rating is 69.7 and the course boasts a slope rating of 118 and has been around since the mid-1950s. The Dyersburg Country Club is also open to the public and has a bit more modern feel to it, though its mid-week pricing to play the course is a bit high for this area of the country. Unless it's the start of a holiday weekend, both courses are generally easy to get tee times to play, and you can normally walk-on without a prearranged time many days.
Travel to Memphis
Dyersburg is close to many other cities and states in the south-west Tennessee corridor. If you can fit it into your plans, making a day trip to Memphis if you have never been is well worth your time. Just over an hour drive from Dyersburg, going to see the National Civil Rights Museum located at the famed Loraine Motel would be the first stop you should make. After your visit at the museum, eat brunch or lunch where Elvis used to frequent at the "Arcade," located just a block west of the museum. After your stomach is full, if you have time travel to Graceland to take a tour of Elvis's mansion and car museum. Check the calendar before going since tens of thousands of fans travel to Graceland in August for Elvis's birthday.
Play Golf at Glen Eagle Golf Course in Millington, TN
Drive the 40 minutes to Millington to the south and play the Glen Eagle Golf Course. Glen Eagle is one of the best golf courses in the area and is priced very reasonably for the quality of the course. It boasts a 72.6 course rating and slope of 131. Unlike many of the other area courses, the fairways are generally impeccably maintained Bermuda grass. You will likely shoot 6 to 10 strokes higher at Glen Eagle than at the Dyersburg courses.
