Best Binoculars for the Money
Binoculars have many uses. From enjoying close-up views at sporting events to assisting the eyes in zooming in on a rare bird in the wild, a solid pair of binoculars can be a wonderful help. While it is possible to spend several hundred, even thousands of dollars, on top-of-the-line field glasses, some manufacturers make very reliable units for much less. Most can be used in the same environments as their highly expensive counterparts.

Nikon Monarch ATB 8x42

The Nikon Monarch ATB 8x42 is a reliable pair of binoculars. Lenses are waterproof and fog-proof. The glasses boast excellent field of view, prism material, and clear image quality. Most retailers are parting with the Nikon Monarch ATB 8x42 for a price in the $250 to $280 range (2009).

Pentax Papilio

The Papilo 6.5x21 is an extremely light model (just over 10 oz.) that focuses well at close range (about 16 to 18 inches). The Papilo is capable of about a 400-foot field of view and is a true pair of compact field glasses at 4.5 inches x 4.3 inches. Expect to part with about $110 to $125 for a pair (Sept. 2009 pricing).

Bushnell Buckhorn

Buckhorn binoculars are available in 10x42 and 12x50 power models. The line has sharp imaging, twist-up eyecups, lens caps and a premium-style case. Buckhorns are also waterproof and made with a nitrogen-purged process to eliminate fogging. Most retailers (2009) are charging between $100 and $150 for a pair of these binocs.

Bushnell Trophy 2.0

The Bushnell Trophy 2.0 series features twist-up eyecups, high-contrast imaging, solid field of view options and a ribbed with grooved rubber armoring. The series consists of 8x42, 10x27, 10x42 and 12x50 power models. Each is waterproof and fog-resistant. The line sells in the $80 to $250 range, depending on the model (2009).
