Downtown Las Vegas is 10 to 20 minutes away from the Strip by car, depending on which part of the Strip you depart from. As of summer 2009, the average taxi ride from the middle of the Strip is around $25, plus tip. The Las Vegas Monorail does not stop downtown, but the 24-hour Deuce double-decker bus does. The Deuce will take you straight from downtown to most of the large hotels along the Strip.
While the Strip resorts have become more expensive and outlandish in recent years, downtown Las Vegas has stayed true to its roots, providing no-frills gambling, dining, and entertainment at reasonable prices so you can spend your money on greens fees instead. Some of the more well-known downtown casinos are Binion's, the Fremont, the Plaza, Fitzgerald's, and the Four Queens. The Golden Nugget is another downtown Las Vegas standby, having been in business since 1946. You can still see the world's largest gold nugget at the hotel, which weighs 61 pounds. Other popular downtown casino hotels include the California Hotel, Golden Gate, El Cortez, and Main Street Station.

An overhead canopy, containing over 12 million LED lights, covers Fremont Street from Fourth Street to Main. The nightly light shows are accompanied by a musical score that booms through a 550,000-watt sound system. The show lasts for 15 minutes and is played every hour between 8:30 p.m. and midnight. There are also two outdoor stages on Fremont Street which host free concerts and events throughout the year. The popular Miss Hawaiian Tropic contest occurs on Fremont Street, along with car shows, parades and holiday celebrations.
