Golf Equipment
Major cities have all the golf equipment you can ever need, so if you've been planning on replacing your bags or balls, a trip to Texas might be the perfect opportunity. As a general rule, it makes sense to bring anything that is personalized or has a specific size, like shoes and gloves. On the other hand, general items like balls and tees can always be bought on the go. If you're bringing your own, remember to pack it in sturdy containers and travel bags so the clubs are not bent or damaged during transportation. If you don't want to go to the expense of bringing your clubs, you might want to consider renting at the course.
When it comes to golf wardrobe, shop for the lightest shirts you can find. A mix of cotton and polyester is best so you don't end up completely soaked after an hour on the course. Materials like knitted Poly-Dri (which keeps perspiration away from the skin), Dri-Mesh (to keep you cool) or microfiber are all made especially for hot and humid weather and will perform well in Texas. The Champion Wicking Polyester Golf Shirt, sold both online and at sports stores, controls moisture buildup and has easy vented hems. Also, make sure the shirt is not too tight, so your skin has a chance to breathe properly. As a rule, bring clothes that you don't mind sweating in and that won't become bothersome once wet.
Everyday Clothing
Texas is hot at any time of the year, although nights tend to be cool. When planning a wardrobe, it's better to think in term of layers, so you can start the day with a T-shirt and then put on a light cotton sweater if needed. Indoor venues are usually heavily air-conditioned, so you will be wise to carry a light jacket with you even in the heat of the day. A waterproof jacket is a good idea if you plan on spending the day walking about; the weather tends to change suddenly in Texas, especially between October and May.
Summers in Texas last between May and October, and temperatures regularly climb over 100 degrees. If you plan on spending time outdoors, focus on light cotton or linen clothes, especially short and sleeveless shirts. Again, temperatures can drop 30-40 degrees in less than an hour, so always bring along an extra item of clothing to layer up.
Extras
To prevent sunburn and heat-related illnesses, bring a hat, sunglasses and sunblock. Anti-perspirant is a must if you want to prevent sweat stains from ruining your clothes. Plenty of water is essential if you plan on spending time in the heat--you might not notice the need for water until you're dehydrated from sweating in the hot, humid weather.
Sturdy walking shoes are essential if you plan on doing any hiking or venturing outside the city centers--the terrain here is rocky and unstable. Sandals are OK for walks around the metropolitan areas, but wear sneakers or walking boots if you hit the trails.
