Things to Do in Hawaii When It Rains

Things to Do in Hawaii When It Rains
The state and islands of Hawaii for the most part have only two major seasons: the dry season which spans from May until October and the wet season which lasts from November until April. During the wet season, which is not always that wet, there are frequent rainy periods and fewer opportunities for tourists to enjoy all the outdoor activities and attractions that Hawaii has to offer. Ducking indoors for an educational experience is a good way to wait out a passing shower.

Iolani Palace

The Iolani Palace is the only official royal residence in the United States and was the residence of the last two monarchs of the Hawaiian Kingdom (King Kalakaua and his sister Queen Lili'uokalani). Visitors can experience what a tropical palace looks like and how it operated. There are several exhibits, including ancient Hawaiian treasures like thrones, crowns and clothing. The Iolani Palace has indoor and outdoor exhibits. When the weather improves, visitors can also enjoy a riveting golf experience at either the Oahu Country Club or the Ala Wai Golf Course which are both located less than 10 minutes from the Iolani Palace.

Volcano Art Center

The Volcano Art Center Gallery is housed in the 1877 Volcano House, adjacent to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park visitors center on the island of Hawaii. The gallery houses exhibits of wood work, stained glass, jewelry, sculptures, books, music, ceramics, photography, paintings and clothing all from both ancient Hawaiian and modern times. There are also hula demonstrations and classes. All of these exhibits and demonstrations are inside the Volcano House, which means that there is no chance of getting wet inside while it rains on the outside. Once it stops raining, visitors can shoot a round or two of golf at Volcano Golf and Country Club which is just minutes away.

Maui Ocean Center

The Maui Ocean Center, also known as the Hawaiian Aquarium, is a state-of-the-art facility providing visitors with an up-close look at Hawaii's marine life. There are numerous exhibits and demonstrations here for visitors to learn about and witness sharks, turtles, eels, sea horses...you name it. Many of the exhibits and demonstrations are indoors. Once it stops raining visitors can enjoy playing a terrific golf course at the Kapalua Golf Resort which is located just 15 minutes away from the Maui Ocean Center.
