Things to Do in the Grand Cayman Islands

By Cicely A. Richard

Things to Do in the Grand Cayman Islands
Grand Cayman Island, the largest of the three Cayman Islands, is home to the capital city of George Town. The Caribbean island offers plenty of things to do for adults and children. Playing golf and participating in other outdoor sports and visiting natural locales and historic sites are just a few of the things to do on Grand Cayman Island.

Britannia Golf Club

This golf club has a par-57, 18-hole executive course with features such as grassy mounds, rolling dunes, lakes and over-sized bunkers. The natural challenges and hazards on this Jack Nicklaus course challenge even experienced golfers. Although the club offers annual memberships, island visitors can purchase a round of golf. PGA golf professional Dave Johnson offers hour-long private lessons for a fee. The golf shop provides appropriate attire for male and female golfers. The Britannia Restaurant, overlooking the 18th hole, serves home-cooked breakfast and lunch items. You can eat and watch the big-screen television on the restaurant's second level.

Queen Elizabeth II Botanic Park

This 65-acre Grand Cayman Island attraction, which opened in 1994, contains the Cayman sand garden, which includes native, traditional and economic plants. The Heritage Garden is planted with fruit trees, traditional crops and medicinal plants. The Floral Colour Garden features a gazebo of colorful flowers. In addition to the plant life, this botanical garden has the Blue Iguana Habitat and an array of butterflies. Plants are sold in the garden's nursery. At the visitor's center's gift shop, you can get a free Woodland Trail Guide that has park information and a map.

Cayman Islands National Museum

This museum, once the Old Courts Building, serves as a center for preserving Cayman Islands history. The museum has more than 8,000 items, including tiny coins, a 14-foot catboat, natural history specimens and rare documents. The two permanent exhibits are the Natural History and Cultural History galleries. The Natural History Gallery features sea and animal exhibits, while the Cultural History Gallery contains exhibits about Cayman Islands' political and judicial systems, island life and seafaring history. After you play a round of golf or participate in other outdoor activities, visit this historic landmark.
