The Biggest St. Louis Restaurants

By David J. Montoya III

St. Louis is home to both fantastic restaurants and golf courses.
St. Louis is famous for its French history, but there's more than just history that keeps tourists returning to this Midwestern city. The biggest, most popular restaurants in St. Louis, including Sidney Street Cafe, Eleven Eleven Mississippi, and Cunetto House of Pasta offer renowned food and wine selections. After a game of golf at Cottonwood Golf Course or Berry Hill Golf Course, make a reservation for dinner and experience the most popular restaurants in St. Louis.

Cunetto House of Pasta

Cunetto House of Pasta is located on "the Hill," St. Louis' historic Italian quarter. Brothers Vince and Joe Cunetto opened this restaurant in 1974 after closing their small pharmacy. Since then, Cunetto has become one of St. Louis' most popular Italian restaurants. According to Cunetto's website, the Italian restaurant regularly wins favorite restaurant polls in St. Louis.

Cunetto is open for both lunch and dinner. The lunch menu includes salads, soups, sandwiches, and pastas. The pasta options are extensive and include Italian classics such as cannelloni bianco, linguini, spaghetti con melanzane, and fettuccini alla cunetto. The sandwich section, the second largest section of the lunch menu, includes roast beef sandwiches, hamburgers, chicken sandwiches, and breaded veal cutlets. The dinner menu includes much of the lunch menu but also has separate beef, chicken, seafood, and veal sections. Bistecca al ferri, scampi a griglia, vitello con limone, and petto di pollo cardinale are just some of the entrees only available on the dinner menu.

Eleven Eleven Mississippi

Eleven Eleven Mississippi is located in historic Lafayette Square and offers a fusion of Tuscan and Northern California Cuisines. Eleven Eleven also refers to itself as a Wine Country Bistro because of fusion of cuisines the restaurant offers and also because of the wide selection of wines made available to patrons. Wine flights, a knowledgeable staff, and a five-course chef's tasting menu where five courses are paired with five different wines are all available for customers to learn about wines from different regions of the world and to learn how to pair wine with food.

The menu at Eleven Eleven offers variety. Oven-baked pizzas are cooked in the large wood fireplace located in the center of the restaurant. Bacon wrapped pork tenderloin, grilled chicken, shellfish fettuccini, pulled smoked pork sandwiches, and sauteed tilapia are examples of what Eleven Eleven prepares in the kitchen.

Happy hour is served in the bar from 4 to 6 p.m., Monday through Thursday. Tuesday nights are "Tuscan Tuesdays" where patrons can purchase a 3 course meal influenced by the traditional cooking of Tuscany. Thursday nights are "California Trio" nights where patrons can purchase a three-course meal based on Northern California cuisine.

Eleven Eleven Mississippi has garnered many awards over the years. In 2004 the restaurant was rated "Best New Restaurant" in the St. Louis Post Readers' Poll, won Sauce Magazines 2005 "Readers' Choice Award" and was named one of America's top restaurants by Zagat Survey in 2005.

Sidney Street Cafe

Sidney Street Cafe is located in the Benton Park District of St. Louis and is one of St. Louis' most popular restaurants, as evidenced by its long lines. Reservations are highly recommended. The restaurant is easily recognizable by the multi-story building it occupies with red brick walls and over-sized windows.

Sidney Street Cafe's menu is influenced by French cuisine. Favorites include the honey mustard shrimp, stuffed mushrooms, and Tuscan sea bass. Other menu items include the apple wood smoked duck, Missouri lamb trio, bleu cheese tarts, and lobster turnovers. The availability of some menu items is based on freshness and seasonality. A large wine and champagne menu is also central to Sidney Street Cafe's menu.

Sidney Street Cafe is so popular that the reservation list is notoriously long. If you plan on dining at Sidney Street Cafe, call several days in advance for a reservation.
