Kaiping--pronounced hoi-ping in Cantonese--is a coastal metropolis really encompassing three smaller cities. According to the city's official website, its population is about 680,000. Most travelers who do not come to Kaiping on business, come instead to see the nearby ancient town of Chikan or to visit the famous Diaolou villages nearby with their many fortified watch towers. Hong Kong is just a short voyage by water shuttle. Nearby Shenzhen is home to the Mission Hills Golf Club--the only Chinese course recognized by the PGA. The easiest way to reserve hotel rooms in Kaiping is online.

The only five-star hotel in Kaiping, the twin towers of the Ever Joint Hotel, also known as the Pan Tower International, are an important feature of the Kaiping skyline. The hotel boasts 297 rooms and suites as well as a large conference facility. As with many large metropolitan hotels in China, the Ever Joint features both a Chinese and a Western Restaurant. Recreational facilities include a pool and fitness area, a card and chess room, a bowling facility and even a nightclub.

The rooms, which were renovated in 2001, are spacious and rates for this and all Kaiping hotel rooms are modest compared to similar properties in the United States and Europe.

Helen Bergh Hotel Kaiping

Opening in 2008, the Helen Bergh Hotel is relatively new on the scene. The look of the hotel with its white stucco facade and palm-lined entrance may, overall, be more Mediterranean than Chinese but, inside its walls, local tradition is honored as well. Rooms here feature private balconies. Ask for one with a view of the lake. Hotel amenities include a pool, tennis courts and a fitness room. The hotel is within an hour's drive of the region's first world heritage site--towers and villages. There is ample conference space and free parking for hotel guests.
