The town of Ortonville, Minnesota, is situated near the Big Stone Lake that forms the border of northeastern South Dakota and western Minnesota. The lake is about 26 miles long and more than a mile wide at the largest point. Ortonville and Big Stone City, South Dakota, are at the southern-most point of the water. Golfing opportunities are available in both communities.

Rustling Elms Resort

Rustling Elms Resort is next to Hartford Beach State Park, three miles north of downtown Ortonville. The three vintage cabins at the resort are positioned on the banks of the lake, each with seven rooms and a fully equipped kitchen. Enjoy a sunset view from the screened porches and on cool evenings use the stone, wood-burning fireplaces for warmth. The resort has a private dock and outdoor fire pits for cabin guests. The rustic location lets you leave behind modern technology. Cabins are available during the summer. Rustling Elms is less than a half-hour drive from nearby golf courses in Graceville and Milbank, South Dakota.

Schmidt's Landing on Big Stone Lake

Schmidt's Landing on Big Stone Lake site offers 14 two-bedroom cabins with extra-long beds and fully equipped kitchens and private baths. Wireless Internet and digital television access is available in each cabin. The cabins are rented using seasonal rates, with summer fees applied for stays from the end of May through Labor Day weekend. A two-night stay is required. Guests will receive a complimentary continental breakfast in June, July and August. No need to rent special sporting equipment; the Landing offers complimentary use of its private boat ramp, picnic tables and grills for cabin guests. Kayaks and pedal boats also are available. Big Stone City is less than 10 miles from Ortonville and just minutes away from Pine Hills Golf Club in Milbank.

Lakeshore Park

Lakeshore Park has a small collection of cottages in a complex that includes spaces for motor homes, as well as camping sites. The park is near Hartford Beach State Park and Whetstone River and offers on-site attractions including train rides for children, a heated swimming pool, miniature golf and sand volleyball. Cabin accommodations have full kitchens and private baths and sleep up to eight people. Smoking and pets are not allowed in any of the cabins. Local attractions include Lou's Greenhouse in nearby Big Stone City, less than a 10-minute drive from the park. Lou's features tours and sales of wholesale plants from the 16 commercial greenhouses. Graceville and Pine Hills Golf Clubs are less than 20 miles away, across the border along the state highway in South Dakota.
