Restaurants on South Street in Philadelphia
South Street, once a product of 1970s Philadelphia counterculture, has become a major tourist destination. Just a few miles away from Franklin D. Roosevelt Golf Club and nestled between such neighborhoods as Society Hill, Bella Vista and Washington Square West, great culinary offerings are never more than a quick jaunt away on South Street. South Street and the surrounding area offer visitors everything from cheesesteaks to five-star meals.

Pizzeria Stella

If you are looking for a little more than a grab-and-go slice on the street, Pizzeria Stella serves artisan pizzas straight out of a wood-burning oven. Pizzeria Stella--which is run by noted Philadelphia restaurateur Stephen Starr--has garnered rave reviews for its pairing of classic technique and stellar ingredients.

Horizons

A vegetarian or vegan on South Street might feel a little overwhelmed when faced with an array of cheesesteak joints. Fortunately, Horizons--a vegan restaurant--sits just half a block off South Street on 7th Street. This restaurant, which opened in 2006, was named "one of the city's best new restaurants" by the "New York Times" and received a covetous "three bells" rating from "Philadelphia Inquirer" restaurant critic Craig LaBan. Horizons' menu includes such dishes as smoked tofu, avocado, red onion, capers and a cucumber dill sauce with pumpernickel points; and creamed leeks, peas and maitake mushrooms with braised black lentils. After your meal, try one of the restaurant's desserts, such as lemon cheesecake, toffee bread pudding or chocolate-stuffed beignets. Horizons' drink menu includes organic tea and coffee, as well as after-dinner spirits.

Ishkabibble's Eatery

For some, a visit to Philadelphia is not complete without devouring what has become a city icon and a difficult-to-replicate delicacy: the cheesesteak. Finding a good cheesesteak on South Street is not hard, but finding a great cheesesteak takes a bit more discernment. If you are looking for a more authentic experience, bypass the tourist trap that has become the iconic Jim's Steaks and head straight for the charmingly, if incomprehensibly, named Ishkabibble's Eatery. A hole in the wall, Ishkabibble's offers only a few counter seats, which are supplemented by a walk-up window.
