Calgary East Indian Restaurants
The largest city in the province of Alberta and the third largest in Canada is also one of the country's leading golf destinations, with 73 courses in the Calgary area, eight of them within the city. The rolling hills and Bow River Valley provide the setting for the courses, and Calgary's East Indian community offers exotic cuisine in its restaurants.

Rajdoot

The house specialty here is chicken tikka, marinated in yogurt and spices, cooked with mango slices and served with butter sauce. Beef, lamb, chicken, fish and seafood curries are also offered, and there is a variety of vegetarian dishes. Several Indian breads and rice pilafs with mushrooms, lemon or coconut are among the menu items. The yogurt-based drink called lassi, either sweet with fruit or savory with spices. Indian milkshakes, including one flavored with rose petals, are offered on the beverage menu. Lunch is served Sunday through Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Dinner is Sunday through Thursday from 5 to 10 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 5 to 11 p.m.

Namskar Fine East Indian Cuisine

The Namskar special platter consists of several kinds of pakoras, the meat, vegetable and cheese fritters that are spiced with garlic, ginger and cumin, dipped in chickpea batter and fried until crisp. The Kachumbar salad is a combination of cucumbers, tomatoes and onions in a lemon and spice dressing and the mulligatawny soup is made with lentils, ginger, curry and coconut cream. Vegetarian dishes are prominent on the menu, as are lamb, beef and chicken curries. Appetizers called samosas are pastry pockets filled with vegetables or beef and seasoned with cilantro. There is a full bar. Lunch is served Monday through Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. and dinner is from 5 to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 4:30 to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 1 to 9 p.m. on Sunday.

Glory of India

The special pakora here is fish Amritsari, marinated in aromatic spices, better dipped and fried. The tandoori dishes of prawn, lamb, beef, chicken or a combination are cooked in a clay oven, called a tandoor, over live coals and brought to the table on the baking dish right from the oven. The rice dish biryani can be ordered with prawns, beef, lamb or vegetables. Salad with mango dressing, yogurt salad called raita, chutney, and papadum, or spicy crackers, compliment the meal. There is a full bar. Lunch is served Monday through Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Dinner is Monday through Saturday from 5 to 10 p.m. The restaurant is closed Sundays.
