A compact jewel of a beach town, Rehoboth Beach appeals to families, couples and gay visitors fairly equally and draws much of Washington, D.C.'s residents who want a break from life in the nation's capital. Zagat's rates the 18-hole championship course at Baywood Greens, southwest of Rehoboth on Route 24, as Delaware's best golf course. If you want to bring your dog, observe that Rehoboth restricts them from the beach and boardwalk from April 1 through Oct. 31. You can take your dog for exercise instead to Cape Henlopen State Park in Lewes or Delaware Seashore State Park south of Dewey Beach. Prices are current as of 2009.
Canalside Inn
Five blocks from the beach, the Canalside Inn offers 12 brightly colored rooms, renovated in 2009. Freebies for guests include breakfast and Wi-Fi, and the inn will loan out bikes and beach chairs for your day on the ocean. Ask about midweek discounts. The Canalside permits up to two pets per room; the inn allows cats or dogs. Its policy notes that pets must be well-behaved; guests must leave a cell phone number where they can be reached if there is an emergency with the pet. Please note at reservation time that you are traveling with a pet. The inn charges $35 for the pet stay and reserves the right to assess an additional cleaning-damage fee. The inn donates $5 of the pet fee to the Safe Haven Animal Sanctuary.
