Daisy May's BBQ
The barbecue at Daisy May's is as authentically Southern as you can get in a town where the Yankees don't just play in the Bronx. While the menu allows you travel outside Dixie to try Kansas City ribs and Texas-style chili, the focus is on items like Tennessee whiskey beer can chicken, Cajun rice and sweet potatoes with brown sugar. The tasting menu gives you a choice from chopped beef brisket, Carolina pulled pork and spicy corn bread. The money went into the food at this NYC eatery rather than the décor, but the affordable prices will make you overlook the lack of standard New York style. Lunch and dinner is served without reservations and casual wear is expected.

Landmark Tavern
The Landmark Tavern is a truly a New York City landmark as it dates back to 1868 when it was a pub for dockworkers. Today, you can still order up a pint of Scottish malt, but it will be accompanied by appetizers like teriyaki chicken skewers and entrees like beef rib filet topped with lobster tail or a sirloin steak. The bar menu ranges from Irish bangers to chicken tabouleh wraps to shepherd's pie. Step up to the long mahogany bar or warm yourself by the Franklin stove during the winter. The Landmark Tavern is open from 11:30 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. every day and the dress code is casual.

Pio Pio
A half mile from the Intrepid you can enjoy rotisserie chicken that is perfect for those looking for something a little spicy. Pio Pio serves Peruvian cuisine that is heavy on the green sauce and stuffed corn. The chicken pio specialty is a whole chicken marinated in the restaurant's homemade sauce, but you also can enjoy empanadas, deep fried mashed potatoes or pan-fried corvina. The best way to enjoy Pio Pio in the spring or fall may be to order up a glass of wine and dine outside in the garden. The restaurant is open from 11:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. on weekdays and closes at midnight on the weekend. Delivery and takeout also are available.
