With dozens of golf courses and hundreds of restaurants in the Portland, Maine, area, it's hard to know where to start when it comes to golfing or dining. Several restaurants there have been rated highly by travelers and locals alike.

Five Fifty-Five

Five Fifty-Five won the Wine Spectator award of excellence for seven consecutive years. The restaurant has also been rated No. 16 in the country by City Magazine, and chef Steve Corry was named one the top 10 best new chefs in 2007 by Food and Wine magazine. Five Fifty-Five is a fine-dining restaurant offering a variety of courses and options. Diners start with "small plate," such as "snails in a pail" or Bang Island mussels, and move on to a green course, savory course, cheese course and dessert. Entrees include creative dishes such as truffled lobster macaroni and cheese and grilled veal porterhouse. There is a variety of cheeses, and to satisfy your sweet tooth, have a dessert such as warm cranberry-cream cheese tart or chocolate-hazelnut upside-down cake. Five Fifty-Five opens daily at 5 p.m. for dinner; Sunday brunch is served from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The Green Elephant

The Green Elephant is a vegetarian bistro with an Asian flair. With a comfortable yet elegant ambiance, the Green Elephant is a favorite of travelers. It was rated No. 1 out of 329 Portland-area restaurants by Trip Advisor reviewers. It is open Tuesday through Saturday for both lunch and dinner, dinner only on Sunday and closed on Monday. Diners can choose from a range of appetizers, salads and entrees. Lunch entrees include items such as organic tea noodles, tofu tikka masala and spic pad-sha rotini. The dinner menu includes all of the items from the lunch menu, usually at a dollar or so more, and some more exquisite dishes like Siamese Dream Curry Noodles, Far East Duck and Veggie Citrus Spare Ribs.

Flatbread Company

Flatbread consistently receives rave reviews and was voted the Best Pizza of 2009 by the Portland Phoenix. It is also ranked in the top 10 restaurants out of over 300 restaurants in the Portland area at Trip Advisor. The ingredients that go into a flatbread pizza are organic, and only free-range and nitrate-free meats are used. Pizzas are baked in a wood-fire cauldron, and choices range from a basic cheese and herb flatbread to the daring "Coevolution" pizza with Kalamata olives, red onions, goat cheese, mozzarella, fresh rosemary, garlic, herbs and more cheese. Flatbread is located in Portland's Old Port district near the waterfront.
