Airports Near the Florida Gulf Coast
Florida's Gulf Coast spans from Pensacola on the west end of the Florida Panhandle to Naples in Southwest Florida. The warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico are a popular draw and the region includes many vacation spots, such as Capitva, Sanibel Island, Naples and St. Petersburg Beach. Water sports and beaches aren't the only attractions in this area. Golfers will find plenty of interesting courses, including St. Petersburg's Mangrove Golf Course and Pensacola's Marcus Beach Golf Course, both on GolfLink's list of best golf courses in Florida.

Southwest Florida International Airport

Southwest Florida International Airport, located in Fort Myers, opened in 1983. The airport served more than eight million passengers in 2007 (according to airport statistics) and partners with 20 airlines. Southwest Florida International Airport is a natural gateway to the popular vacation destinations of Sanibel Island, Naples and Captiva. The airport's long (12,000-foot) runway also serves as a back-up for space shuttle landings.

Tampa International Airport

Tampa International Airport, located six miles west of downtown Tampa, served more than 18 million passengers in 2008, according to airport statistics. The facility hosts eight major airlines and offers 260 daily non-stop flights to cities throughout the United States and abroad. Tampa is a hub for Southwest Airlines and AirTran Airways.

St. Petersburg Clearwater International Airport

St. Petersburg-Clearwater International Airport is located on the south end of Tampa Bay. In 2008, the facility served more than 700,000 passengers, according to airport statistics. The airport is the site of the first commercial air flight from St. Petersburg to Tampa in 1914. The St. Petersburg-Clearwater airport even has its own golf course, the public Airco Golf Course, located just outside the airport gates.

Pensacola Gulf Coast Regional Airport

Pensacola Regional Airport, located three miles northeast of the city's central business district, opened in 1933. The 1,400-acre airport served more than 1.5 million passengers in 2005, according to airport statistics. Nine airlines, including US Airways and Delta Airlines use Pensacola Regional Gulf Coast Airport.
