The Rio Grande Valley is located along the northern edge of the Rio Grande River at the southern base of Texas. Several cities are part of the Rio Grande Valley, including Mission, Brownsville, Harlingen, McAllen and Edinburg. Some of the area's most popular attractions are the Museum of South Texas History, South Padre Island and Bentsen Rio Grande Valley State Park. The area is also home to some great public golf courses including the Shary Municipal golf course, the Tony Butler Municipal golf course and the course at the Brownsville Golf Center.

Shary Municipal Golf Course

The Shary Municipal golf course is an 18-hole, par-71 course that is 6,025 yards from the back tees (5,672 yards from the middle tees and 4,893 yards from the front tees) with a rating of 69.9 and slope rating of 118. The course first opened in 1929, was designed by George Williams and contains several sand traps, tall trees and water hazards. Both the greens and fairways are made of quality Bermuda grass. There is also a smaller nine-hole course, driving range and a full services snack bar on the premises. Green fees for the full 18-hole course begin around $20 per person as of 2009.

Brownsville Golf Center Course

The Brownsville Golf Center has an 18-hole, par-70, 6,049 yard course that has a rating of 69.3 and a slope rating of 113. The course first opened in 1971, was designed by Donald Sechrest and contains several water hazards throughout but no sand bunkers. The course is constructed with Bermuda grass on the greens and fairways. There is a full practice facility with driving range, putting greens and an on-site golf pro for lessons and tips as well as a restaurant and bar. Both golf carts and clubs are available to rent and green fees begin around $20 per person per round as of 2009.

Tony Butler Municipal Golf Course

The Tony Butler Municipal golf course is an 18-hole, par-71 championship course with a rating of 69.1 and a slope rating of 113. The distances from tees to holes are 6,320 yards from the back tees, 5,837 yards from the middle tees and 5,123 yards from the front tees. The course first opened in 1929, was designed by John Bredemus and the greens and fairways are constructed with Bermuda grass. There is also a nine-hole course, driving range and golf pro all on-site as well. Green fees for the 18-hole course begin around $15 as of 2009 and there are also golf carts and clubs available for rent.
