The Best Hawaiian Vacations

The Best Hawaiian Vacations
Planning the best vacations in Hawaii depends on your personal interests and who will be traveling with you. There are six main islands to choose from, each with its own distinct landscapes, attractions and character. You also need to decide if you want to spend time on just one Hawaiian island or do some island hopping.

The Best Family Vacations

If you are going to Hawaii with children there are a few basic considerations. When choosing accommodations, try to find somewhere with a pool for the children to enjoy; if the beach is within walking distance that is even better. If your children are fussy eaters find a place with kitchen facilities. You will save money compared with eating out and can stock up on the children's favorites at a local market. You can purchase or rent diving masks and snorkels in Hawaii, but if your children will use them every day and you have room in your luggage then bring them from home. Activities that entertain children include whale and dolphin watching tours, gentle hikes and luaus. Check with hotel staff or local tour companies for beaches where the waves are safe for children to play in.

The Best Golf Vacations

All of the major Hawaiian islands have great courses for golfers of any ability and budget. Oahu is notable as the location of both "the hardest golf club in the world" and "the busiest golf course in the world." Ko'olau Golf Club is widely regarded as the hardest in the world due to its extreme slopes, rugged landscape and dense tropical vegetation. From the back tees it has a slope rating of 152. Ala Wai Golf Course is a public course situated in downtown Honolulu that is listed as the busiest in the world in the Guiness Book of Records. Throughout the islands you can golf on active volcanoes, at championship courses rated as some of the best in America, or at small courses suitable for beginners.

The Best Nature Vacations

If you want to experience the natural landscapes of the islands, you can visit Hawaii Volcanoes National Park on the Big Island where you can see where molten lava flows into the ocean from Mount Kilauea. If you're an experienced hiker, you can hike across the black undulating lava beds at the end of the Chain of Craters Road to get a better view. The island of Kauai offers the only navigable rivers in Hawaii and offers the chance to kayak, canoe or take a boat trip along the waters through tropical waterfall-filled rainforest. On Maui, a drive along the Hana Highway passes through some of Hawaii's most spectacular scenery and gives you the opportunity to stop along the way to swim in pools and under waterfalls.
