Must Have
Pack shorts, T-shirts, sandals, walking shoes and a baseball cap or straw hat, to keep the sun off your head and out of your eyes. After all, you don't want to miss that golfing putt because you're blinded by the afternoon sun. You'll need to pack your golfing shoes and gloves, unless you plan to purchase new ones while on the islands.
Bring at least one bathing suit and beach towel. Many hotels do not like to loan towels out. Pack two bathing suits if you don't plan to buy one on the islands. With two suits, you will be able to leave one to dry and still have one to wear. Bring a bathing suit cover-up, if you like. They are easier to slip on than trying to get shorts and a T-shirt over a wet suit.
Sunglasses are essential, or you will find you have strange tan lines on your face from squinting all day. Flip-flops are nice for the beach, but not a must-have item. Pack a windbreaker and a disposable poncho, just in case the weather turns.
Evening Attire
Many restaurants are fine with your daywear. Other dining locations may require "resort wear." This means nicer shorts or long pants and collared shirts, for men; and sundresses, nicer shorts or long pants, for women. If you plan to dine at an upscale restaurant, bring dressier clothes. However, to be sure, always ask about the dress code when you make reservations. It's better to be sure than to be turned away at the door when you are in your khaki shorts and they require a jacket and tie.
Good to Have
You'll be glad you brought your digital camera. In fact, it could almost be in the essential category. You need to bring your sunblock only if you require a certain type. Otherwise, you can purchase it almost anywhere in Hawaii. Don't forget your lips. Bring or buy lip balm containing sunblock. Search out a good traveling guide book and atlas or maps of the islands, before you leave home. Study it, so you have some idea of things you want to see and how to plan your itinerary. A book about the best golf courses in Hawaii also might be fun travel reading. Binoculars are handy when you are sightseeing. Pack a pair or two of the small, compact type.
If you plan to do some hiking and/or power shopping, you'll want to pack a lightweight backpack. Include bottled water, sunblock, snacks, an extra shirt, bug spray and moist towelettes in your backpack.
