Old Dungeon Ghyll Hotel
Thirty-five minutes from the Windermere Golf Club in Ambleside's Great Langdale Valley, the Old Dungeon Ghyll Hotel has sheltered travelers since the 1700s. While only four of the hotel's 13 guest rooms have en suite shower facilities, all have period decor with antique furnishings and coffee and tea making facilities.
Its remote location puts the Old Dungeon beyond cell phone range, and television has given way to a selection of board games in the hotel lounge cupboard. The lounge's open log fireplace welcomes guests to gather after their days exploring the Lakes District or climbing the nearby fells. Fresh coffee, tea, and cakes are always on hand.
Room prices include a homemade full English breakfast served in the hotel dining room. The hotel also provides lunches and dinners in the bar as well as five-course dining room dinners. A typical dinner entree is Lakeland trout baked in white wine and butter with a walnut and orange cream sauce, potatoes, and seasonal vegetables.

An Enjoy England Silver Award and Four Star Guest Accommodation, Freshfields Guest House is a family-run bed and breakfast less than six miles from Windermere Golf Club. Built in 1904, this non-smoking adults-only establishment has three double en suite rooms, all with TVs, clock radios, coffee and tea trays, mini-refrigerators and hair dryers. Fresh garden flowers provide a homey touch.
Overlooking the hotel garden, the two south facing rooms have views of Latterbarrow Fell, while the third room looks east over Wansfell Pike, Ambleside's main thoroughfare. The hotel's breakfast room is off limits for cell phones. Guests can choose a lighter start to the day with a selection of cereals and juices or fresh grapefruit, or go for a hot breakfast of Cumberland sausage, bacon, eggs prepared to order, grilled mushrooms and tomatoes and fried bread. Freshfields will provide vegetarian sausages on request.
