Casino in Riverside, Iowa

Casino in Riverside, Iowa
Riverside, Iowa is a small Iowa town of less than 1,000 people as of the 2005 census. This town is home to the Riverside Casino and Golf Resort, although it is probably most famous for its place in science fiction history as the "future birthplace" of Captain James T. Kirk from the original "Star Trek" series. Around the state this casino enjoys local fame, and the town itself is home of several buildings registered with the National Historic Registry. Riverside has an unusual combination of a modern casino designed around Vegas right in the midst of picturesque small town Iowa.

Riverside Casino and Golf Resort

As of 2009, the Riverside Casino and Golf Resort is the only casino in Riverside and was opened in 2006. This casino has over 1,200 slot machines, 24 blackjack tables, craps, roulette, Caribbean Stud and Pai-Gow Poker table games. There is also a large poker room, as well as plasma TVs for watching sports and occasional tournaments for blackjack, poker and other card games.

There is a shuttle service for "Resort Club Members" to and from nearby communities like Burlington and Muscatine, and the casino has a hotel attached and is located right next to its own renowned local golf course.

The Golf Course

The golf course at the Riverside Casino and Golf Resort is a full 18-hole course designed by Rees Jones, who has designed over 100 different golf courses, including five PGA courses and seven U.S. Open courses. The course spans over 7,500 yards and includes all the sand traps and water hazards you would expect from a top notch golf course. It also sports its own clubhouse, a pro shop and teaching facilities for beginners or novices who want to improve their game before tackling a challenging course.

Scenic Riverside

The casino and the golf course might be the main attractions for visitors, but the small town of Riverside, Iowa has plenty to offer. The local Catholic church is a registered historical building, and there is a history museum in Riverside that even includes a room on "Star Trek," a nod to its ties with the future Captain Kirk. There are three city parks, and the local VFW has an incredible mural depicting the armed conflicts of the 20th century.

Riverside is also an excellent central location, as it is only 12 miles from Iowa City (home of the University of Iowa) and approximately 30 miles from Cedar Rapids, the largest city in Eastern Iowa. Everything in Riverside is within walking distance, making it easy to get through the town.
