Attractions in Marietta, Georgia
Marietta is a suburb of Atlanta that in the past two decades has been swallowed by urban sprawl. Where there used to be a bit of undeveloped country separating the city from the more rural community, today it is impossible to find the dividing line among the retail stores, restaurants and apartment communities. The essence of Marietta's birth as a small town still can be found in the tree-lined fairways on the golf courses that provide views of the residential areas.

The Big Chicken

The Big Chicken is the unofficial symbol of Marietta and a geographic touchstone. Ask for directions to anywhere in Marietta and you will likely divine its location by its proximity to the massive steel representation of a red and white chicken in front of the local KFC.

You can buy food inside the restaurant or just go in and buy memorabilia devoted to this landmark that has been in place since the 1960s. The announcement that the Big Chicken would be torn down in the 1990s because of safety concerns was met with local outrage and an influx of money that has made it better than ever.

City Club Marietta Golf Course

City Club Marietta reveals the hilly nature of this community that can be lost amid the concrete jungle. This course is open to the public and its rolling terrain can seem like a links-style course. The trees provide scenery without interfering with your game, and when you reach the top of the hill, be prepared for wide-open views of the city below. There is plenty of water on the course, but it is mostly for decoration and comes into play only on a few holes. If you get a tee time after 3 p.m., you will pay only the 9-hole fee to play the entire 18-hole course.

Six Flags White Water

If you plan to play at the City Club Marietta during the summer, you might be grateful for the close proximity of Six Flags White Water. This water park is one of the best ways to beat the high heat and heavy humidity of midsummer in Marietta. There are rides here for all ages and personality types. The Dragon's Tail and its 250-foot drop is good for thrill-seekers, while the Tidal Wave gently sends big waves that you can body-surf into the Little Hooch River. There are plenty of flumes and tunnels and slides to keep you refreshed so you can head back to the golf course another day.
