Disney Resorts in California

By Robert Vaux

Disney Resorts in California
The Walt Disney Company has only one resort in California. The Disneyland Resort first opened in 1955--part of Walt's dream of giving his fans somewhere they could experience his vision first-hand--and has since expanded to become one of the most famous resorts in the world. It includes two separate theme parks, three hotels and a shopping district called Downtown Disney. In addition, one of its hotels is an official Disney Club Vacation Resort, the only one of its kind on the West Coast.

Theme Parks

For many years, the Disneyland Resort had only one theme park, Disneyland proper. It features eight themed "lands" encompassing a number of rides and attractions. Classic standbys such as the Jungle Cruise and Pirates of the Caribbean stand side-by-side with new rides like Splash Mountain and Indiana Jones. Parades along Main Street are a daily occurrence, and fireworks take place on weekends and during the summer months. In 2001, Disney opened a second park right next door. Disney's California Adventure features rides and attractions with a West Coast feel, ranging from Grizzly River Run ride to Soarin' Over California. Each park requires separate admission, but periodic special deals allow visitors to purchase two tickets for the price of one.

Hotels and Shopping

To accommodate its theme parks, Disney has built or purchased three official hotels onsite. The original Disneyland Hotel has been open since 1955, and currently features three separate towers with nearly 1,000 rooms. Two additional hotels were added in 2001--Disney's Grand Californian and Disney's Paradise Pier. All three hotels include restaurants, pools, workout rooms and character breakfasts with many of the resort's beloved mascots. They surround the Downtown Disney shopping district, which also opened in 2001. Its proximity to the hotels allows out-of-town visitors to enjoy it just as easily. Unlike Walt Disney World, both the hotels and Downtown Disney are within easy walking distance of the parks, allowing you to enjoy all of them on any given day.

The Villas

The Villas are a series of vacation homes at Disney's Grand Californian. They are listed as the only West Coast resort in Disney's Vacation Club program. Villas range from studio-sized accommodations to three-bedroom suites and provide easy access to both the theme parks and the Grand Californian's full-service spa. They also provide a special entrance to Disney's California Adventure. Disney Vacation Club members also have access to many of the area's golf courses and tennis courts, though additional fees may apply.
