The village of Scotia, New York lies about 25 miles west of Albany, the state capital. It's next door neighbor is Schenectady, home of General Electric and the country's first television station. Scotia offers some unique places to eat, some of which will take you back in time. For golfers, the Mohawk Golf club is one of the premier courses in the capital region and has hosted major tournaments. If you like a side dish of history with elegant dining, check out the Glen Sanders Mansion. The dining room is nearly 300 years old and features traditional dishes like pecan-crusted trout amd chicken milanese and unusual desserts like pumpkin cannoli. Reservations and proper dress required. Entrees are priced around $20 with other courses a la carte.

Jumpin' Jack's Drive-In
You can almost hear the American Graffiti soundtrack at this old-fashioned burger and fries joint on the Scotia-Schenectady border. While there aren't any waitresses on roller skates, the parking lot is loaded with park benches and the air filled with the smell of Jumpin' Jack's famous fries. Soft ice cream treats complete this trip down memory lane. Jumpin' Jack's is open only during the summer and has a nice public park across the street.

Castelo's
Healthy portions and unique dishes make Castelo's a favorite for those who like Italian food. One of the more unusual offerings is shrimp scampi pizza, which combines garlic shrimp with Castelo's excellent sauce. The restaurant offers very reasonable prices, and is a great deal for families.

Pinhead Susan's
Named for a piece of recurring graffiti ("Susan is a pinhead") on the city's Amtrak station, this Irish pub offers plenty of brews and huge, reasonably priced meals in a casual atmosphere. From steaks to Mexican to Italian, you're sure to find something on the menu that appeals, along with prices that fill you up for less than $15. The true story of Pinhead Susan is worth reading while you wait for your order.

For those who love old-fashioned stainless steel diners with a a few hundred items on the menu, look no further than the Glenville Queen Diner.
