With a population of less than 4,000, according to the 2000 census, Cullowhee is a popular spot for golfers and other outdoor enthusiasts exploring the Appalachian Mountains. Offering scenic vistas and cultural charm, Cullowhee remains temperate all year-round with mild winters and summer temperatures up to 90 degrees Fahrenheit. Travelers in search of accommodation have a number of options in the area for a night's stay.

The University Inn

Located near both the Jackson airport and the Western Carolina University campus, the University Inn offers the only non-chain hotel option in the region. Based in a traditional barn setting, the Inn offers single beds starting at $50 and doubles for $65 as of 2009. For an additional rate, travelers can also request a built-in kitchen for those bargain-hunters wanting to cut down on dining costs. Offering a number of custom golf packages, as well as other outdoor recreational activities and information, the University Inn is a good choice for golfers on the look-out for a friendly local establishment to spend the evening.

Located a short drive up I-170, the Comfort Inn at Sylva offers 70 rooms for travelers passing through the mountains. Prices for an average room begin at $68 (as of 2009) for this two-star budget hotel, and amenities include free parking, high-speed Internet, wheelchair services, an outdoor pool and it is within walking distance to the quaint historical town of Sylva. Offering special deals for longer stays, the Comfort Inn is a good bet for travelers.

Carol's Cabins

Though a slightly farther drive into the beautiful Nantahala Forest, a number of online reviews have made Carol's Cabins worth looking at. Located 10 minutes from Western Carolina University at Cullowhee, Carol's Cabins are privately-rented nooks located on the banks of the Tuckasegee River. A very popular spot for hikers, golfers and other outdoor sportsmen, each cabin comes with an individual restroom, kitchen, bedroom and living room, all fully furnished and prepared for over-night stays. Easily the priciest among the local options, Carol's Cabins start at $109 per night during the winter and early summer, and reach $139 during the June and July peak seasons, as of 2009.
