The town of Silverton, Colorado, at an elevation of 9,318 feet above sea level, was founded in the Rockies during the gold rush of the late nineteenth century. A railroad, now known as the Durango/Silverton Narrow Gauge, reached the town in 1882, bringing more people to work in the mines. The mines failed and the town welcomed guests from the film industry who used the downtown as a set. Located high in the mountains, Silverton is a mecca for railroad enthusiasts, skiers, hikers, cyclists and climbers. Following are a few hotels in the area.
