Chesterfield County is on the eastern side of central Virginia. The county line is just below the state's capital, Richmond. There are several public golf courses here, both in the county seat, Chesterfield, and in surrounding towns. If you are taking a vacation to Richmond, this more rural county is a natural stop that will take you away from the stress of the city.
Oasis Sports Park
This complete sports and entertainment area has a nine-hole par three course. The distance from tee off ranges from 75 to 175 yards, depending on the hole. Along with numerous trees and rough areas, this course has a prominent pond. It is a good challenge for experienced golfers, but not too tough for novices to give it a shot. Golf pro Travis Atkins offers lessons Tuesdays through Saturdays between the hours of 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. Once golfers are finished with their round, they can check out the miniature golf course and batting cages.

The Highlands
This 18-hole golf course is part of a 2,500 acre residential community, but the public is welcome to come and play. Designed to be a peaceful escape, it is bordered by oaks and pines on all sides. Rolling fairways punctuated by bunkers and water hazards keep the golfer from getting too complacent. Par is 72, which is fairly average, but the abundant hazards can quickly increase the score. Golfers can practice at several areas: the driving range, the greenside bunkers and the putting greens. Lessons are available for golfers at all skill levels.

River's Bend Golf Club
This par 71 course is home to one of the most beautiful water hazards in the county, which impacts four of its holes. It is also host to several large groves of trees. It has four sets of tees: blue, gold, red and white, so that golfers of different abilities can enjoy the game together. The slope for the toughest tees is 132. It is 119 for the easiest. Total yardage ranges from 4,932 to 6,671, again depending on the tees you use. You can purchase play cards if you plan to visit more than four times. Each use gives you a round of golf and a bag of balls you can use at the driving range.
