Charlotte, North Carolina, is a good vacation spot for people that love being outside. It has numerous public art exhibits, nearby whitewater rafting areas and several golf courses. Tom Doak designed this Scottish-style course in 1993. It is an 18-hole, par-71 with rolling hills. Challenging features include water hazards formed by both streams and ponds and rough areas populated with heather grass. Since the course is lighted, you can book tee times as late as 8 p.m. year-round. You can also book lessons with PGA pros. This course has a banquet room for large groups, a pro shop, a casual restaurant and putting and chipping areas.

Highland Creek Golf Club

This tough course, designed by the architectural firm of Clifton, Ezell and Clifton, measures more than 7,000 yards. It has a total of 72 bunkers to make for challenging play, plus five lakes that come into play on 13 of the 18 holes. Total par is 72, and the slope rating is 138 from the gold tees. If you want a slightly easier game, try the blue, white or red tees, which all have lower slope ratings. Get in some practice to prepare for your game at the driving range or the practice green. The green has pitching and bunker areas in addition to the typical putting space. Lessons are available daily. Young people can attend golf camp each summer.

Surrounded by groves of hardwood trees, this course's fairways are made up of rolling hills. Designed in 1996 by John Cassell, it was meant to blend golf with nature. The course has a slope rating of 140 from the most challenging set of tees. If you go with the beginner red tees, that rating drops to 114. Total par is 72 for 18 holes. The practice area has a bunker area, a putting green and a driving range. All are open during daylight hours. You can take 45-minute lessons with an on-site golf pro or attend a camp or golf clinic. Ask about separate clinics for youth, beginner adults, ladies and seniors.
