Cleveland, Texas, is in the southeast corner of the state, about 100 miles north of Galveston. It is not in a big touristy area, which is good if you want to enjoy your golf vacation without worrying about lines and traffic. There are several good courses near the city that are definitely worth a try. While many think of Texas as a desert area, this region is actually lush and green.
Oakhurst Golf Club
This club is 20 miles south of Cleveland. It has an 18-hole championship course that totals 7,002 yards in length. The course is surrounded by native pines and hardwood trees, which add to its beauty but can also restrict your view on certain holes. Hay Riviere and Dave Marr designed Oakhurst to be challenging but not overwhelming. You can also prime your skills on the all-grass practice range.

Texas National Golf Club
This par-72 measures 6,800 yards on a total of more than 200 acres of land. Located on a plateau, it is relatively flat and provides a secluded tree-lined setting. Water hazards are prominent, impacting 12 out of the 18 holes. Hole two requires that you hit over a pond on tee off. Golf carts are required on Saturdays and Sundays, but you are welcome to walk the course on weekdays. This facility has a driving range and putting green. You can play a free round on your birthday. Ask for details at the clubhouse. The club is 27 miles west of Cleveland.

Cape Royale Golf Club
Located on the banks of Lake Livingston, 20 miles north of Cleveland, this course is a haven for wildlife, especially deer. It has natural rolling hills with significant differences in elevation depending on where you are on the course. The total par is 70, which is split evenly between the front nine and the back nine. Despite the presence of the lake, only one hole features a significant water hazard. While you're waiting for your tee time, you can practice at the driving range or enjoy a burger or hot dog at the café. You can also sign up for private golf instruction. If you're under 18, in the military, in law enforcement or over 65, you get 10 percent off of your green fees.
